Cerrillos wins steeplechase on first day of SCIAC Championships

LOS ANGELES — Melissa Cerrillos won the 3,000m steeplechase to lead the University of La Verne women's track and field team on the first day of SCIAC Championships on Friday.

Cerrillos, a freshman from Claremont, slashed more than 13 seconds off her previous personal record -- set just two weeks ago -- and crossed the finish line in 11 minutes, 21.32 seconds to win her first conference medal.

Mele Halalilo scored valuable points in throwing events. The senior finished second in the shot put with a toss of 11.99 meters (39 feet, 4 inches) and fifth in the javelin with a throw of 37.32m (122-05).

Ky'Esha Charles finished sixth in the shot put with a toss of 10.88m (35-08.50).

Dreama Gonzales and Micaela Krumweide scored points in the long jump with a sixth place and an eighth place finish, respectively. Gonzales leaped 5.24m (17-02.25) and Krumweide jumped 5.18m (17-00.00).

All track events with the exception of the steeplechase and the 10,000m were preliminaries for finals on Saturday. Events on the track begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday with the 4x100m relays.
