Women's Track & Field finishes sixth at SCIAC Championships

LOS ANGELES — The University of La Verne women's track and field team recorded a handful of seasonal and personal bests as it finished sixth at the 2016 SCIAC Championships at Occidental's Bill Henry Track.

The most exciting finish for the Leopards came at the very end of the meet where La Verne freshman Ebony Turner and Vanessa Blanchard of Redlands went to a jump-off for the high jump crown. Blanchard went first and cleared 1.60 meters (5 feet, 3 inches) but unfortunately for La Verne, Turner barely nicked the bar on her try to settle for second.

The day started with throwing events and Mele Halalilo made the podium in the discus with a throw of 41.17m (135-01) to finish third. Ky'Esha Charles recorded a toss of 32.43m (106-05) to finish eighth and rounded out the scoring.

Gaby Moura-Hayes scored a point for the Leopards in the hammer throw with a toss of 37.06m (121-07).

The 4x100m relay team of Jessica Reeves, Dreama Gonzales, Kimmy Kabluyen and Tiahna Gillon kicked off the running events with a season-best time of 48.91 seconds and finished second.

Kabluyen recorded a personal record in the 400 meters as she crossed the finish line in 57.53 and finished second in the event.

Gillon was fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.58.

Micaela Krumweide earned a bronze in the triple jump with a personal best jump of 10.90m (35-09.25) and Jessica Reeves finished seventh in the event wit ha leap of 10.71m (35-01.75).

Carmen Sandoval came in fifth in the 400m hurdles with a personal record time of 65.75.

The Leopards finished sixth overall as a team.
