Cerrillos, Lee Kim break records at championship warm-up meets

LA VERNE, Calif. — Melissa Cerrillos and Catalina Lee Kim of the La Verne women's track and field team continued to break records, setting new prgoram records in the 3000 meter steeplechase and 100 meter hurdles, respectively, in a pair of championship warm-up meets over the last two weeks.

Cerrillos broke the 11-minute mark in the steeplechase at the annual Occidental Invitational on May 6, crossing the finishline in 10 minutes, 56.70 seconds. Lee Kim went 14.75 in the 100m hurdles at the Westmont All on the Line Qualifier, shaving one-tenth of a second off her previous record.

Cerrillos's steeplechase mark ranks 22nd in Division III and puts her squarely on the bubble for qualification to the NCAA National Championshpis. Lee Kim is also on the bubble for the hurdles an the triple jump. Her hurdles time ranks 28th in the nation and her triple jump mark of 5.63m (18 feet, 5.75 inches) puts her 26th. 

For each woman's individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 22 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the national champinoship competition. 

Both athletes will get one final chance to improve their standings this Wednesday and Thursday at the Redlands Final Qualifier Meet.
