Cerrillos, Lee Kim break records at final warm-up meet

REDLANDS, Calif. — Melissa Cerrillos and Catalina Lee Kim of the La Verne women's track and field team broke school records yet again at Redlands Final Qualifier, the final meet before the 2017 NCAA Division III National Championshps, on Thursday at Ted Runner Stadium.

Both Cerrillos and Lee Kim are virtual locks to earn qualifications to the national championships after their big performances. The top 22 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the competition and Cerrillos ranks 22nd in the steeplechase while Lee Kim is ranked 19th in the 100m hurdles.

The list of national championship qualifers will be released on Saturday.

Cerrillos lowered her program record mark in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, winning the race with a time of 10 minutes, 55.51 seconds. Had she not improved her time, she would be sitting outside the top-22.

"I'm impressed Melissa was able to improve her time because only three people were in the race and it was a windy night," La Verne coach Bryan George said."A second and a half is a big deal when you're trying to get into the national championship."

Lee Kim fired off a time of 14.54 in the 100 meter hurdles to break her own school record in the event.

"Catalina is a hard-working individual who is now seeing the fruits of her work in her training sessions," "She has done incredibly well this season and I am looking forward to what she will accomplish on the national stage."

Two seniors competed in their final collegiate meets and posted good results. Taylor Schulze recorded a personal record in the pole vault, clearing 3.53m (11 feet, 7 inches), and Carmen Sandoval posted a time of 1:06.83 in the 400m hurdles.
