GENEVA, Ohio — La Verne sophomore Melissa Cerrillos's outstanding season came to an end on Thursday as she just missed qualification for the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase final at the 2017 NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships, hosted by Mount Union and the Cleveland Sports Commission.
Cerrillos, the two-time reigning SCIAC champion, raced in the second of two preliminary heats and came in eighth with a time of 11 minutes, 6.60 seconds. Fourteen athletes—top five finishers from each heat and the next best four athletes—advanced to the final and Cerrillos just missed out as she placed 16th overall. Cerrillos was ranked 21st coming into the meet.
The race wraps up a stellar season for the Claremont native. She raced five steeplechase races before the national championships this season and lowered the school record in the event each time.
The action continues for the Leopards tomorrow when Catalina Lee Kim competes in the 100 metere hurdles prelim at 11:15 a.m. PDT.
