Leopards Dominant In Sweep Over Bulldogs

Another win, another sweep for the nation's third-ranked team.

The University of La Verne rolled to a three-set triumph over the University of Redlands, topping the Bulldogs by scores of 25-20, 25-13, 25-15 Friday night at Frantz Athletic Court.  With the win the Leopards improve to 9-0 and 3-0 on the season while Redlands drops to 5-7 and 2-1, respectively.

The Leopards dominated nearly every phase of the contest holding statistical edges over Redlands in hitting percentage (.250 to .000), kills (34-22) digs (62-42).  

La Verne opened the match with a 21-13 cushion in the first set before the visitors closed with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 21-19.  The Leos responded by taking four of the next five points to grab the first set, 25-20.  The Green and Orange kept its momentum and coasted in the second frame, enjoying leads of 10-3 and 20-9 en route to a 2-0 set advantage.  The Leopards finished off the Bulldogs in set three with an 11-1 spurt to take a 17-4 lead en route to closing out the match.  La Verne enjoyed its best hitting percentage in third frame at .526.   

Brianna Gonzales paced the Leos in kills with a match-high of 13 to go along with 11 digs in posting a double-double.   Gonzales was one of four La Verne players to collect at least 10 digs with setter Yesenia Lopez leading the way with 16 followed by Chelsea Sleight with 14. Lopez also posted a double-double with a match-high 16 assists.

The Leopards continue conference action next Tuesday at home against Occidental College.
