Leopards score league volleyball win

The University of La Verne won a tightly-contested five-set match with league rival University of Redlands Tuesday night.

Four of the five sets were decided by three points or less, with the Bulldogs taking the first set 25-23 before La Verne leveled at 27-25 in the second. Redlands won a 25-22 third set before the Leos closed the match with 25-11 and 15-13 victories.

Sophomore outside hitter Ashlyn Cross powered the Leos with a double-double on the night (20 kills, 14 digs). Freshman middle blocker Kelsi Robinson added 16 kills to the offensive effort while sophomore outside hitter Brittany Yaxley had 13. Freshman setter Tiffany Mancuso totaled 46 assists on the night. The Leopards held a .224-.187 advantage in hitting percentage.

La Verne is slated for a conference road matchup Friday with Chapman in Orange, Calif. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
