Leo volleyball squad splits league matches

LA VERNE- The University of La Verne volleyball team split a pair of SCIAC matches over the weekend.

The Leopards (7-22, 4-10 SCIAC) fell in four sets to Chapman University (16-8, 9-3 SCIAC) Friday evening 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-18.

Sophomore outside hitters Brittany Yaxley and Ashlyn Cross had double-double efforts. Both had 17 digs while Yaxley recorded 14 kills and Cross tallied 12. Freshman setter Tiffany Mancuso racked up 37 assists. Freshman middle blocker Kelsi Robinson and sophomore middle blocker Destinee Sales each had four blocks. 

La Verne bounced back at home Saturday with a convincing 25-9, 25-12, 25-11 sweep of the California Institute of Technology (2-15, 0-13 SCIAC).

The Leos hit a sizzling .407 on the match, with Cross and Yaxley recording 14 and 11 kills respectively. Mancuso added another 26 assists while junior libero Anna Suarez and senior defensive specialist Janelle Lubong made 11 digs apiece.

La Verne is scheduled to take the court Friday in Whittier, Calif. for a conference game against Whittier College at 7:30 p.m.
