Robinson, Vega Named SCIAC Athletes of the Week

PASADENA — The University of La Verne swept this week's SCIAC Athletes of the Week awards as Kelsi Robinson of volleyball and Josh Vega of men's water polo have been named Female and Male Athletes of the Week of Sept. 8-14.

Robinson was instrumental in La Verne's wins over Pomona-Pitzer and No. 6 Colorado College on Sept. 13. In a 3-0 sweep of Pomona-Pitzer, the sophomore middle blocker registered 16 kills to just two errors in 26 attempts (.538 K%) and was dominant at the net, recording 3.5 total blocks (1 solo, 5 assists). Just hours after beating the Sagehens, Robinson put down 11 kills in 26 attempts, served up three aces and recorded three more block assists in a 3-1 upset of No. 6 Colorado College.

Through games of Sept. 14, Robinson is ranked seventh in the nation in blocks per set with 1.41.

Vega scored a total of nine goals at the 2014 Inland Empire Classic, all of which came in two wins over SCIAC rivals Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer. The freshman scored five goals in the win against CMS and started a crucial 4-0 second half run that propelled the Leopards to the win. Vega added four more goals in a 10-9 win against Pomona-Pitzer, three of which came in the second half when the Sagehens made a furious bid for the comeback.

Both volleyball and men's water polo return to action this Friday. Volleyball will travel to Los Angeles to Occidental while men's water polo will head to Riverside to compete in the annual Lancer Invitational hosted by Cal Baptist.
