Volleyball Overwhelms Caltech

PASADENA — A trio of freshman had the best game of its young career, Brittany Yaxley served up 13 aces and the University of La Verne volleyball team made quick work of Caltech on the road, 25-3, 25-6, 25-15, on Saturday at Braun Athletic Center.

How it happened: La Verne completely dominated all aspects of the match and the Beavers had no answer.

The Leopards registered 25 aces, hit .410 and kept the Beavers in single digit each of the first two sets.

Yaxley knocked down an incredible seven straight aces and Kylie Cooke bookended them with a pair of kills to close the first set on a 10-0 run.

Caltech got the first point of the second set but the Leopards came from all angles to pull away. Teresa Roquet had three aces, Yaxley added five more and five players recorded kills for the Leopards in the second set.

The third and final set was the most competitive. The Beavers got to 8-6 on three consecutive errors by La Verne, but the Leopards quickly regrouped and rattled off four consecutive points. Flynn Salas-Miller recorded all five of her kills in the third set and Roquet had three aces.

Players of the game: With the match out of hand early, the Leopards' freshmen saw extended action and played very well.

Roquet tallied six aces and dished out a game-high 11 assists. Salas-Miller put away five kills in 10 attempts and got in on a block. Kylie Cooke hit .556 on nine attempt.

Stat of the game: The offensive stats were staggering but the Leopards were solid defensively as well. The Leopards limited the Beavers to just six kills in the entire match. Caltech managed just one kill each in the first two sets.

What it means: After hitting a brief road bump against No. 19 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sept. 20, the Leopards are rolling again. La Verne improves to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in SCIAC play.

Up next: La Verne returns to action on Oct. 3 against Whitter at Frantz Court.
