Volleyball makes easy work of Redlands

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne volleyball team defeated Redlands, 25-15, 25-13, 25-11 on Saturday evening at Frantz Court. The win extends La Verne's overall winning streak to six and its SCIAC streak to three.

How it happened: Redlands tested La Verne early, taking an early 4-1 lead, but the Leopards' overall athleticism and talent proved to too much to overcome. After a Brittany Yaxley service error made it 6-5 in favor of Redlands in the first set, La Verne took eight of the next nine points to take a commanding 13-7 lead. The Leopards then went on a series of runs and led the rest of the set. Kelsi Robinson had six kills in the set to lead La Verne.

La Verne led wire-to-wire the rest of the match.

Robinson, Yaxley and Destinee Sales got La Verne off to a 3-0 start in the second set with a kill each and the Leopards never looked back. The closest the Bulldogs would get was 3-2 when they answered the early La Verne run with a kill by Ellie McLeod and a La Verne error. The Leopards won 10 of the last 13 points to claim the set.

La Verne jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third and never looked back. Redlands wasn't able to string together any consecutive points and the Leopards cruised to a 25-11 set victory.

Stat of the game: La Verne hit .421 as a team on 76 attempts with four players posting at least six kills. It was the fourth match this season that La Verne has hit .400 or better.

Players of the game: Robinson led the charge with 10 kills without an error in 12 attempts while Yaxley added nine and Nysa Allen had 7.

Ashlyn Cross registered six kills and dug a team-high eight attempts.

What it means: La Verne (17-3, 9-2 SCIAC) is rolling. The Leopards have won seven of last eight SCIAC matches and have a realistic shot at hosting at least the first round of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.

Up next: The Leopards return to action at Chapman on Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
