CLAREMONT, Calif. — No. 10 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps shut down the University of La Verne volleyball team in three sets to run away with a victory on Saturday night at the Linde Activities Center.
The Leopards could not recharge fast enough after a huge upset against No. 6 Cal Lutheran Friday night.
The Leopards came out swinging in the first set to a quick 3-0 lead but CMS rattled off three straight kills to tie it up. La Verne gathered momentum and started out on a 6-3 run and held onto a four-point lead until a block error brought the score to 19-16. CMS fired back to get within one point at 21-20 and kept on going. CMS took the first set 25-23.
The second set started out much like the first, with La Verne jumping out to a 3-0 lead behind kills by Ashlyn Cross and Destinee Sales but CMS stayed close behind. Four kills and an attack error turned the tide and CMS never looked back. An Athena kill decided the second set at 25-17.
The third set was all CMS. Brittany Yaxley earned two kills, Mele Halalilo and Kelsi Robinson each added one apiece, but the third set produced 10 kills for CMS as they closed out the set, 25-10.
La Verne returns to action at home Tuesday to take on Occidental at 7:30 p.m.
