Volleyball stumbles against Trinity (TX)

LA VERNE, Calif. — Hours after claiming an upset victory over No. 10 Hendrix, the University of La Verne volleyball team had a tough time stopping Trinity's (Texas) attack in a 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 loss in the final game of the first day of the annual Pacific Coast Classic.

The Tigers hit .217 on the match but was clinical in the first and the third sets, converting at .308 and .405 clips, respectively. Trinity was off its rhythm in the second set (-.051) but the Leopards also slumped in the set and lost in straight sets.

Trinity has proven to be a thorn on the Leopards side. The two teams have squared off against each other in each of the past three seasons and Trinity won every match in straight sets.

La Verne led for the most of the first two sets but could not finish the deal in either. Trinity finished the first set on a 6-2 run and wrapped up the second set on an 8-3 streak.

Kelsi Robinson had eight kills and 3.5 total blocks to lead the Leopards. Marisa Rojo had seven kills and 10 digs. Kelsie Sievers and Cassie Thompson each registered six kills.

Jade Schoenberger led all players with 13 kills and Madeline McKay was close behind with 12 for Trinity.

The Leopards are back in action tomorrow for another pair of games. La Verne faces Union (N.Y.) at 11:15 a.m. and takes on Neumann at 3:30 p.m.
