Volleyball cruises past Pomona-Pitzer, 3-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. — There was no comedown.

Less than 24 hours after upsetting No. 4 and defending national champion Cal Lutheran, the University of La Verne volleyball team dominated Pomona-Pitzer en route to a 25-13, 25-17, 25-19 win on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Last season, after beating the then-No. 6 Regals in a thrilling five-setter on a Friday, the Leopards couldn't recharge fast enough and lost to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in straight sets the next day.

Head coach Jenna Panatier made sure that did not happen tonight.

The Leopards hit a red-hot .460 on the match while just committing seven errors and recorded eight total blocks.

Kelsi Robinson knocked down 12 kills on 18 attempts, Delaney Lynch had 11 on 23 swings and Cassie Thompson notched 10 on 18 tries.

Tiffany Mancuso handed out a match-high 37 assists and made four digs. Cherene Uale had five kills and three blocks.

The Sagehens did well for themselves, hitting .250, but just could not match La Verne's firepower.

La Verne claimed five of the match's first six points to get out to an early 5-1 lead in the first, but the Sagehens fought back to get within 9-8. But the Leopards ripped off five unanswered points on the strength of three kills and an ace and eventually stretched the lead out to as much as 21-11 before claiming the set.

The second and third sets played out similarly but Pomona-Pitzer made things interesting late in the third set. After a Cherene Uale kill gave the Leopards a 21-13 lead, the Sagehens rattled off five straight points on three kills and two aces to cut the lead to 21-18. But Cassie Thompson put down two straight kill to stop the momentum and Mancuso wrapped it up with a kill.

La Verne improves to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 7-7 and 3-3.

The Leopards return to action on Tuesday at home against Caltech.
