Volleyball cruises at Redlands, 3-0

REDLANDS, Calif. — The University of La Verne volleyball team continued its all-around dominance as it beat Redlands, 25-20, 25-12, 25-14, on Friday night at Currier Gymnasium.

La Verne has won nine games in a row and eight in straight sets. The Leopards improve to 17-4 overall and 8-2 in the SCIAC. Redlands falls to 11-8 and 2-8.

Marisa Rojo notched double-digit kills for the third match in a row, knocking down 10 tonight at a .304 clip. She added two aces and nine digs.

Cassie Thompson was her usual efficient self and put away eight kills without an error in 18 attempts while adding two blocks.

Delaney Lynch, Kelsi Robinson and Cherene Uale each registered seven kills.

The Leopards were nimble on defense yet again, limiting the Bulldogs to just .079 hitting. It was the fourth consecutive game La Verne held its opponent to under .100 hitting. The Leopards collected 47 digs and recorded four total blocks tonight.

The Bulldogs caught the Leopards off guard to start the match, jumping out to a 15-10 lead in the first set. But La Verne promptly tied the match with five unanswered points to tie the set at 15-15 and ripped off a 7-0 run keyed by four kills from Uale a couple points later to grab a 23-17 lead.

It was all La Verne from there. The Leopards grabbed eight of the first 10 points in the first set and quickly stretched the lead 19-6 aided by strong defense and bad hitting by the Bulldogs. La Verne consistently forced Redlands into overhitting and the Bulldogs ended up hitting just -.120 on the set. Meanwhile, La Verne needed just 19 swings to knock down 10 kills.

Redlands stayed somewhat closer in the third set but a 7-0 run by La Verne late in the set put the match away. Natalie Barragan landed four aces during that stretch.

Sofia Olsson led Redlands with seven kills.

The Leopards are back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Chapman.
