No. 25 Volleyball Finishes Pacific Coast Classic 4-0

LA VERNE, Calif. — The No. 25 University of La Verne volleyball team won big over Union (N.Y.) and edged out Brockport in a tight match to end the 2017 Pacific Coast Classic 4-0.

The Leopards won in five sets against both No. 10 UT Dallas and Wisconsin-Eau Claire in day one of the tournament.

Game One: La Verne 3, Union 0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-20)

The Leopards jumped out to early five point leads and never trailed in both of the first two sets.

In the third set, Union battled back to tie the game at 17-17 before the Leopards ended the game on a 8-3 run to seal the sweep.

Kelsie Sievers finished the match with eight kills and Marisa Rojo followed right behind with seven kills on their way to the win. 

Natalie Barragan dished out 13 assists to go with six digs. Libero Kristen Sanchez finished the match with 17 digs. 

Katelyn Winiecki added six kills in the match to go with four service aces. 

Game Two: La Verne 3, Brockport 2 (25-13, 20-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-11)

Delaney Lynch was dominant in the Leopards' second win of the day, leading all players with 23 kills in the match. 

The Leopards controlled the first set of the match, leading by as many as 12 points on their way to the early 1-0 lead. But the Golden Eagles stormed back, winning the next to sets.

Both teams battled to a 20-20 tie in the fourth set before the Leopards went on a 3-0 run highlighted by kills from Katelyn Winiecki and Darrah Jones. Lynch finished the set with two more kills to even the match at 2-2.

The Leopards never trailed in the final set of the match, closing out the weekend undefeated. Madison Maynes had 31 assists and eight digs in the match. Marisa Rojo was solid both offensively and defensively, finishing the game with eight kills and 19 digs.

Kelsie Sievers added six kills, Darrah Jones had five kills, and Mireya Rojo and Katelyn Winiecki each added four kills of their own.

Next Game: The Leopards take a trip to the East Coast next weekend to play in the MIT Invitational. The Leopards will face Babson on Friday, September 8 at 3 p.m. The following day La Verne opens with a 9 a.m. match against Springfield, followed by a 1 p.m. match against host MIT.
