No. 15 Volleyball wins third straight, beats Sagehens 3-1

CLAREMONT, Calif. — After dropping a first close set, the No. 15 University of La Verne volleyball team rallied to win the next three sets to score a 3-1 win on the road against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens.

Set Scores: 27-29, 25-16, 25-15, 25-21

Season Impact: The Leopards win their third game in a row and improve to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in SCIAC play. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 5-12 overall and 2-3 in SCIAC play. 

Marisa Rojo finished with a team-high 13 kills on .433 hitting percentage in the match to go with 11 digs and a block. 

Kelsie Sievers added nine kills and two blocks.

After dropping the first set in extra points, the Leopards started hot in the second set, jumping out to a 10-3 lead. The Leopards never let Pomona-Pitzer back in the set, winning by nine points. 

The Leopards were even more dominant in the third, hitting .385 as a team in the set. La Verne closed the game on a 10-4 run to take a 2-1 lead.

The Sagehens put up a fight in the third set, tying the game at 21-21. But a pair of errors by Pomona-Pitzer and back-to-back kills by Darrah Jones and Katelyn Winiecki sealed the win for La Verne.

Delaney Lynch added eight kills in the game. Winiecki had a big game up front finishing with seven total blocks. Mireya Rojo put down six kills. 

Kristen Sanchez had a game-high 25 kills. Natalie Barragan led all players with 19 assists. 

Julia Zwaal led the Sagehens with 15 kills.

Next Game: The Leopards return home tomorrow to face the Occidental College Tigers at 6 p.m.
