No. 15 Volleyball sweeps Occidental at home

LA VERNE, Calif. — Marisa Rojo led the Leopards with 10 kills and the No. 15 University of La Verne volleyball team swept the Occidental College Tigers at home Saturday night.

Set Scores: 25-14, 25-18, 25-20

Season Impact: The Leopards win their fourth game in a row and improve to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in the SCIAC. La Verne is a perfect 8-0 at home this season.

Occidental falls to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Rojo finished with double-digit kills for the ninth time this season. Delaney Lynch added seven kills on .357 hitting in the game.

The Leopards benefited from poor hitting by the Tigers in the first set of the match, taking an early 11-6 lead. La Verne led by as many as 11 points in the set to take the early 1-0 lead.

Occidental stayed close with La Verne for the first few points in the second set, but the Leopards went on a 7-2 run midway through the set highlighted by an ace by Rojo and a kill by Alexia Balistreri to take control for good.

After the Tigers tied the set 15-15 in the third, the Leopards regrouped to win the next three points. The Tigers would get no closer, and La Verne closed the match on back-to-back kills by Rojo.

Balistreri finished the game with four total blocks to go with five kills. Kristen Sanchez finished with a game-high 13 digs.

Mireya Rojo added seven kills, four digs, and a block assist in the game. Madison Myness dished out 16 assists with Natalie Barragan adding 14 assists. Katelyn Winiecki totaled four kills on seven attacks.
