Volleyball grabs 3-1 win at Redlands

REDLANDS, CA — Kelsie Sievers was dominant at the net, Madison Maynes dished out 43 assists and the University of La Verne volleyball team scored a 3-1 win on the road against the Redlands Bulldogs Friday night.

Season Impact

La Verne grabs their second SCIAC win of the season, improving to 2-1 in SCIAC play. The Leopards boost their overall record to 6-5.

The Bulldogs fall to 6-6 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Set Scores: 25-14, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18

Stat Leaders

Sievers led the Leopards offensively in the match. The senior hit .333 on her way to her career high and added three blocks as well.

Fellow senior Kristen Sanchez was reliable as usual for the Leopards, finishing with a game-high 30 digs. Sanchez who surpassed 1,500 career digs earlier this season moved her total to 1,624 career digs. 

Maynes added 14 digs to go with her 43 assists. Katelyn Winiecki and Haley Celaya both put down eight kills. 

The Bulldogs were led by Sofia Olsson's 13 kills.

How It Happened

The Leopards got off to a hot start in the opening set, hitting .387 in their most dominant set-win of the match. After the frame started competitively with the squads playing to an even 7-7, the Leopards went on a 13-4 run to take a nine-point lead. Back-to-back kills by Maynes and Emma Estigoy put the set away.

Redlands battled back in the second set tying the frame 22-22 with a Megan Houston kill. But Sievers took the game into her hands, putting down three straight kills to put La Verne up 2-0.

After Redlands avoided the sweep with a close win in the third set, La Verne put the game away in the fourth hitting .297.

Next Game: The Leopards return home tomorrow when they host the Caltech Beavers at 4 p.m.
