Leopards leave Eagle Rock with win

LOS ANGELES — Haley Celaya led all players with a career-high 23 kills, Madison Maynes tied her career-high with 52 assists and the University of La Verne volleyball team grabbed a 3-2 win on the road Wednesday night against the Occidental College Tigers.

Set Scores: 21-25, 25-18, 25-16, 22-25, 15-8

Season Impact

The Leopards improve to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in SCIAC play. The Tigers fall to 3-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Stat Leaders

Celaya had the best statistical game of her young Leopard career. The freshman hit an outstanding .419 on her way to 23 kills and also did well defensively, adding four blocks and six digs.

Senior Kelsie Sievers put down 14 kills on .323 hitting. Emma Estigoy and Katelyn Winiecki both added 13 kills. 

Kristen Sanchez finished with 25 digs moving her career total to 1,668 digs.

How it Happened

The Tigers got out to a 9-3 lead to open the first set, but La Verne woke up and rallied to tie the set 13-13 and again at 20-20 after back-to-back kills by Celaya. Occidental closed out the set on a 5-1 run to take the early lead in the match.

La Verne evened the game in the next set, going on a 7-2 run late in the frame to take a 19-14 lead. Maynes ended the set with an ace. The Leopards hit .400 in the set.

The Leopards' hot hitting continued in the third, ending the set with a .483 hitting percentage to take a 2-1 lead.

After the Tigers won a close fourth set to force the deciding frame, La Verne jumped out an early lead in the fifth and held on for the win.

Next Game

The Leopards return home to play the Whittier College Poets on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will be a "White Out." All Leopard fans are encouraged to wear all white to the game.
