Volleyball battles but falls to No. 2 CMS

CLAREMONT, CA — Katelyn Winiecki put down a game-high 13 kills, Kristen Sanchez led all players with 23 digs, and the Leopards stayed close with No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday evening.

But the University of La Verne volleyball team couldn't take a set from the defending national champions, falling 3-0.

Set Scores: 25-21, 25-23, 25-21

After dropping the opening set, the Leopards had a chance to even the score 1-1. La Verne took a 23-20 lead after Madison Maynes put down a kill. But Claremont-Mudd-Scripps rallied off five straight points to take a two-set advantage.

In the third, La Verne trailed 23-16 but battled back. This time the Leopards scored five straight points led by back-to-back kills from Winiecki. The Athenas responded with a kill to bring up match point and an attack error by La Verne ended the match.

Emma Estigoy finished with 17 digs. Kelsie Sievers totaled nine kills. Maynes dished out 20 assists and put down eight kills. Briana Voght finished with seven kills.

The Athenas' were led by Amanda Walker's 12 kills.

Season Impact

With the loss, the Leopards drop to 13-9 overall and 5-5 in conference play. The Athenas improve to 18-3 overall and 9-1 in SCIAC play.

Next Game

The Leopards return home on Tuesday, October 16 to host the Redlands Bulldogs at 7 p.m. La Verne took down the Bulldogs in four sets earlier this season.
