CLAREMONT, CA — The Leopards fell on the road 3-1 to Pomona-Pitzer but that one set win saved the University of La Verne volleyball team from a potential coin-flip scenario to determine the third and fourth seeds in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
As it stands, the Leopards earn the fourth seed and will enter the SCIAC Postseason Tournament for the fifth year in a row.
The Sagehens needed to sweep La Verne to keep their postseason aspirations alive. For a moment it looked like Pomona-Pitzer would pull it off, tying the third set 25-25 with a 2-0 overall lead. But a kill by Haley Celaya and an ace Kristen Sanchez gave La Verne the set win.
After Chapman lost in five sets to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, it set up a three-way tie for third place between the Panthers, Leopards, and Sagehens all with 10-6 SCIAC records. Chapman finished with the best head-to-head record amongst the three teams at 3-1 to earn the three seed, followed by La Verne (2-2), and Pomona-Pitzer (1-3) leaving the Sagehens the odd team out.
La Verne will face No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the SCIAC Tournament Semifinals on Thursday, November 1 at Roberts Pavilion. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Celaya led the Leopards with 13 kills against the Sagehens with Kelsie Sievers contributing 11. Madison Maynes dished out 26 assists and Kristen Sanchez finished with 21 digs.
