Volleyball Finishes Leo Invite 3-0

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne volleyball team closed out the 2019 Leopard Invitational in dominating fashion, scoring another pair of wins to end the invite a perfect 3-0.

La Verne lost just one set in three matches. Pi'ikea Clemens and Haley Celaya earned Leopard Invitational All-Tournament Team honors.

Season Impact

With the wins, the Leopards improve to 6-5 overall.

Game One: La Verne 3, UC Santa Cruz 0

Set Scores: 25-15, 25-19, 26-24

Clemens paved the way for La Verne with 13 kills with a .379 hitting percentage. The junior added six digs.

Darrah Jones and Celaya finished with seven kills apiece. Celaya added seven digs and led all players with five aces.

Rylee Callen was efficient offensively finishing with a .417 hitting percentage and six kills. Emma Estigoy added a game-high 19 digs.

Madison Maynes dished out 35 assists to go with six digs, two kills, and two aces.

After rolling through the first two sets, the Leopards battled the Banana Slugs in the third frame to complete the sweep. Tied 24-24 Celaya put the game away with back-to-back kills to end the match.

Game Two: La Verne 3, Puget Sound 1

Set Scores: 25-12, 23-25, 25-13, 25-11

After the Loggers won the second set to even the match 1-1, the Leopards dominated the last two frames to end the weekend with an unblemished record.

Celaya put down a game-high 17 kills off a .310 hitting percentage with five digs and an ace. Clemens totaled 12 kills, 12 digs, three assists, and three aces.

Ayana Mier had a big game at the net, leading La Verne with five blocks. On the offensive end, freshman added five kills.

Estigoy led La Verne 15 digs, assisted on five kills, and totaled three aces. Maynes finished with 36 assists, 12 digs, and three kills.

Jordan Holman led Puget Sound with eight kills.

Next Game

The Leopards ride their three-game winning streak into next week's conference opener. La Verne opens SCIAC play at Occidental on Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m.
