Volleyball wins 5th Straight, Sweeps Redlands

LA VERNE, CA — Pi'ikea Clemens finished with double-digit kills and the University of La Verne volleyball team put in a show in their SCIAC home opener, sweeping the Redlands Bulldogs.

Season Impact

The Leopards continue to roll. La Verne has won five straight and seven of their last nine games to improve to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC action. La Verne has dropped just one set in their last five matches.

Redlands drops to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in conference play. 

Stat Leaders

Madison Maynes had an outstanding all-around game for the Leopards. The senior leader dished out 29 assists, dug 15 balls, served three aces, and put down three kills on a .600 hitting percentage.

Clemens finished with 10 kills, the fourth straight game she's finished with double-digit kills, and added nine digs, two aces, one block, and one assist.

Haley Celaya totaled nine kills, four digs, two aces, and a block. Libero Emma Estigoy was her usual dependable self, leading La Verne with 21 digs and added four assists.

Darrah Jones had a big game with seven kills, nine digs, two blocks, and an ace. Rylee Callen totaled five kills and Ayana Mier finished with three kills.

The Bulldogs were led by Hannah Lanyon's seven kills and Ally Busch's 18 digs.

How It Happened

After the Leopards rolled in the first set, the Bulldogs put up a fight in the second and took a 16-12 lead. But La Verne surged back, going on a 5-1 run highlighted by kills from Clemens and Callen and an ace by Clemens to tie the set 17-17.

The teams battled to 26-26 when Maynes gave the Leopards a one-point advantage off a quick attack. An attack error by the Bulldogs gave La Verne the 2-0 lead.

La Verne jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the third set and the never looked back on their way to their second straight sweep.

Next Game

The Leopards have a big test in their next match when they travel to face No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Tuesday, September 24. Game time at Roberts Pavilion is set for 7 p.m.
