Volleyball Gives No. 5 CMS Scare on Senior Day

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne volleyball team took a 2-0 set lead over No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and looked poised to take down one of the top teams in the nation. 

But the Athenas responded and won the final three sets to end the Leopards' upset bid.

Set Scores: 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-17, 15-10

Season Impact

The Leopards now turn their attention to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament where they enter as the No. 4 seed. La Verne won't have to wait long to get another shot at the Athenas as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed and will host the Leopards in the semifinal round.

La Verne ends the regular season with a 15-12 overall record and a 9-7 SCIAC mark. The Leopards have won at least 15 games in six straight season. The Athenas finish at 24-3 overall and 15-1 in the conference.

Stat Leaders

Pi'ikea Clemens and Ayana Mier led the Leopards with outstanding offensive performances. Clemens finished with a game and career-high 19 kills off .212 hitting with five blocks and nine digs. Mier put down 17 kills and added a pair of blocks.

Seniors Madison Maynes and Darrah Jones both had top performances in their final game inside The Tents. Maynes dished out 50 assists to go with 15 digs and two blocks. Jones recorded 11 kills with a .273 hitting percentage, four digs, one block, and one assist.

Rylee Callen put in an outstanding defensive effort. The freshman registered a career-high seven digs in the effort to go with five kills and three digs.

Emma Estigoy notched a game-high 26 digs and added four assists and one ace. Jasmine Chandler totaled six kills, two blocks, and two digs.

The Athenas were led by Phoebe Madsen's 27 assists, 15 digs, 11 kills, and two blocks. 

Next Game

The Leopards will travel to Roberts Pavilion on Thursday for their SCIAC Semifinal matchup against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
