Leopards Battle Athenas In SCIAC Tournament Opening Round

Claremont, CA. - The University of La Verne volleyball team began the quest to a conference championship tonight on the road at nationally-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Leopards and Athenas clashed against for the second time in five days. La Verne was looking for payback as the Athenas defeated La Verne in their previous match.

After closing regular season SCIAC play, La Verne entered the 2022 SCIAC post-season tournament as the #4 seed.

La Verne would start out the first set, taking an early 4-2 lead over Claremont. The set would continue to remain close as both teams remained within two points of each other until the match was tied at 18-18. Claremont would then take the lead and hold on to win the set 25-23. The second and third sets of play would prove to be costly for the Leopards, as they got behind early and had to fight back to gain control of the match. The second set would end with La Verne falling by a final score of 25-15 and the third set would see La Verne fall by the same final score of 25-15. Mya Ray led La Verne with 12 kills and 9 digs. Olivia Rueckert had 6 blocks for the Leopards.

The opening-round loss would bring the Leopards season to an end, as they finished the 2022 season with a record of 17-10.
