Water Polo Earns Two Victories

Led by a consistent offensive attack, the Unversity of La Verne women's water polo squad notched a pair of victories against the Beavers of Caltech and the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes.

The Leopards would begin Saturday action with a 15-7 victory over Caltech, aided by 12 goals in the first half.  Maddie Lovrensky anchored the La Verne offense with three goals in the first frame alone with an additional three goals in the second and third quarters.    Alex Gudeneau. Ryanne Bible, and Nicole Tuning would also take part in the first quarter assault with goals towards building a 6-1 lead.

The La Verne defense would also play an integral part in the victory holding the Beavers to just 2 goals at the half allowing the offense to tack on an additional six goals in the second. Gudeneau, Catie Tuning, Nicole Tuning, and Justine Mojarro were responsible for the additional goals in the second.

Caltech would make a run at the goal in the second half scoring five goals but would be stopped by the stifling La Verne defense.  Lovrensky added another pair of goals en route to a six-goal game in the third period further extending the La Verne lead.  The final goal would come from Bible at the midway mark of the fourth quarter.

Later in the day, La Verne would edge Cal State San Bernardino in a nip-and-tuck battle.  The victory was a complete team effort as the Leo offense provided critical momentum changing goals and a persistent Leopard defense made critical stops to halt Coyote attacks on the goal.   Lovrensky and Bible once again recorded multi-goal matches helping the Leos capture a slim victory.  La Verne took an early 1-0 lead but the lead would change hands several times througghout the match.

Lovrensky's goal at the 1:40 mark in the third quarter would tip the balance in favor of La Verne who would then go on a late 4-2 run to turn back the Coyotes.

The Leopards improve to 11-19 overall and 1-5 in SCIAC competition with the pair of victories.  La Verne is back in action on Saturday as the Leopards battle against Occidental on Senior Day in an 11:00 am start.
