RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of La Verne women's water polo competed against three more NCAA Division I schools and got a good test against conference rival Redlands at the Lancer Invitational hosted by the Cal Baptist University and fell short in all four games.

Game 1 (Friday): Cal Baptist 19, La Verne 6

Cal Baptist opened the game with a 4-0 run and never looked back.

Laura Kocsis opened the scoring 23 seconds into the game, Hannah Evans scored two and Raine Paul netted one to give the Lancers to get out to a 4-0 lead less than halfway into the first quarter.

The Lancers added six goals each in the second and third quarters to pull away from the Leopards.

Lora Marquez-Salgado put the Leopards on the board with a power play goal at the 2:58 mark in the first and Jacqueline Rojas scored in each of the final three frames to record a hat trick.

Catie Tuning added a goal in the third and Amber Tardif scored in the second quarter.

Kocsis finished with a game-high five goals for Cal Baptist and Kaitlyn Persky had three.

Game 2 (Friday):  Loyola Marymount 17, La Verne 4

La Verne kept it close against the Division I No. 9 Loyola Marymount in the first quarter, but the Lions ripped off a 13-0 run to put the game out of the reach for the Leopards.

Sarah Jefferis scored the first goal of the game two minutes in and Rojas tied it at 2-2 after the Lions scored two in a row to take a brief 2-1 lead.

But it was all LMU from that point.

The Lions poured in seven goals in the second quarter and added three more in the third quarter while blanking the Leopards.

Olga Quiroz stopped the run about halfway into the fourth quarter, but it was too late by then.

Rojas added a late goal to finish with two on the game.

Twelve different Lions scored in the game led by Erin Byrne, who scored three.

Game 3 (Saturday): Iona 21, La Verne 3

Iona jumped out to a 6-0 first quarter lead and the Leopards never recovered.

Marquez-Salgado opened the second quarter scoring to stop the run, but the defense couldn't stop Iona's offensive momentum.

The Gaels scored six goals in the first, the third and the fourth quarters.

tardif scored late in the second and Catie Tuning added a goal in the fourth quarter.

Amy Olsen led all scorers with four for Iona and three other Gaels had hat tricks.

Game 4 (Saturday): Redlands 12, La Verne 7

In the final game of the tournament, La Verne was in striking distance all game but could not find enough offense to get past the Bulldogs as it lost 12-7.

After a Quiroz goal tied the game at 1-1 at the 4:38 mark in the first quarter, Redlands went on a small 3-0 run to give itself a cushion that they would not relinquish.

Justine Mojarro scored two goals in the second quarter to keep the Leopards in the game but Redlands' Julie Lupfer turned away shot after shot to keep the Leopards at bay. Lupfer made five saves in the second quarter alone and finished with 10 on the game.

Mojarro scored her third goal of the game in the third quarter to bring La Verne within 5-4, but that was as close as the Leopards would get. Redlands then went on a 5-1 lead into the final quarter to open up at 10-5 lead and pulled away.

Megan Little had two goals for the Leopards and Quiroz added one.

Rojas started in the cage for La Verne and had seven saves.
