Women’s Water Polo Splits Against Division II Schools

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of La Verne women's water polo team earned a split against a pair of Division II schools on Sunday at the University of Redlands.

In a see-saw Game 2, the Leopards beat Cal State San Bernardino, 11-10. The teams changed leads seven times, tied it 10 times and neither led by more than one goal at any point.

But La Verne had the final say as Sarah Jefferis scored the game-winner with 43 seconds left in the game.

The Roadrunners called a timeout immediately after the goal, but the Leopards bore down on defense for one last possession and held on for the victory.

Jacqueline Rojas was brilliant in the cage once again for the Leopards. The junior turned away a shot after shot to keep the Leopards in the game and finished the game with a total of 20 saves.

Justine Mojarro led the Leopard attack with four goals, scoring two each in the second and the fourth quarters.

Amber Tardif, Lora Marquez-Salgado and Jefferis had two each. Catie Tuning pitched in with one in the first quarter.

Alison Glaser led all scorers with five goals for CSUSB.

The Leopards kept it close in the first game of the day against Cal State East Bay, but the Pioneers finished the game on an 8-2 run to pull away for a 16-9 win.

La Verne started off slow and trailed, 3-1, after the first quarter. But the Leopards got on track and tied the game at 4-4 at the 4:57 mark in the second quarter on goals by Marquez-Salgado, Jefferis and Melanie Consiglio.

The teams traded goals after that and La Verne was within 8-7 as late as two minutes left in the third quarter after a goal by Jefferis. But the Pioneers scored five unanswered goals to open up a 13-7 lead. Marquez-Salgado and Jessica Watkins scored late goals for La Verne, but the difference was too much to overcome.

La Verne returns to conference action on Wednesday at Whittier.
