CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of La Verne women's water polo team was within striking distance all game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, but wasn't quite able to get over the hump as it lost, 10-8 on Saturday at the Axelrod Pool.

La Verne got within one goal with about two minutes to go in the game when Lora Marquez-Salgado and Catie Tuning scored consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 9-8, but could not find the equalizer.

Meghan Jimenez scored the dagger goal with 28 seconds left for the Athenas.

La Verne got on the board first when Justine Mojarro scored just 40 seconds into the game. But CMS tied it almost immediately when Alex Toohey scored about 40 seconds later and took the lead with another Toohey goal at the 6:15 mark in the 1st quarter. Marquez-Salgado tied at 2-2 and Sarah Jefferis knotted it at 3-3, but that was as close as the Leopards would get.

Lora Marquez-Salgado led the Leopards with four goals.

Toohey finished with a game-high five goals for the Athenas.
