Women's Water Polo Falls to Occidental

LOS ANGELES – The University of La Verne women's water polo gave up four goals in each of the first two periods and could not keep up offensively as it lost, 12-6, at Occidental College on Saturday.

La Verne falls to 5-22 overall and 1-5 in SCIAC. Oxy goes to 5-17 and 3-3.

Catie Tuning tied the game at 1-1 with a goal at the 1:45 mark in the first, but the Tigers rattled off three goals in a span of 51 seconds to finish the quarter with a 4-1 lead.

Justine Mojarro scored two in the second quarter for La Verne, but Oxy scored four more in the period to pull away.

The Leopards tightened up defensively and held the Tigers to four total goals in the second half, but just could not gain any offensive momentum.

Jefferis converted a penalty shot in the third while Maddie Lovrensky and Catie Tuning added one apiece in the fourth.

Katya Soot was the game's leading scorer with five goals. Three other Tigers had multiple goals.

Jacqueline Rojas made five saves in the cage for La Verne.

The Leopards return to the pool on Wednesday when it travels to Thousand Oaks to face Cal Lutheran at 4 p.m.
