Marquez-Salgado, Tuning post hat tricks at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. —Chapman went on a 6-0 run in the second half to break an 8-8 tie and take a 14-10 win over the University of La Verne women's water polo team at the Allred Aquatics Center on Saturday.

After playing catch-up most of the game, the Leopards tied the game at 8-8 on three straight goals in the third quarter. Jacqueline Rojas converted a penalty at the 6:29 mark to bring La Verne within 6-8 and Megan Little and Lora Marquez-Salgado followed with a goal apiece to tie the game.

But the Panthers closed the third quarter with two more goals to get out to a 10-8 lead and rattled off four more unanswered goals in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to run away to a 14-8 lead. By the time Marquez-Salgado scored two late goals to stop the bleeding, but it was too little, too late.

La Verne falls to 4-10 overall and 2-2 in the SCIAC. Chapman improves to 11-12 and 3-2.

Marquez-Salgado and Catie Tuning had three goals apiece for the Leopards.

Maddie Lovrensky, fresh off a pair of All-America performances at the 2015 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving National Championships, made her water polo season debut and recorded a goal in the first quarter.

Emily Holmquist posted a game-high four goals for Chapman and Emily Fong added three.

La Verne returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Occidental at 4 p.m.
