CLAREMONT, Calif. — The University of La Verne women's water polo team took on a pair of upper-division teams on the final day of the 2016 Claremont Convergence, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer, and earned split results.
The Leopards dominated Division II Concordia (Calif.), 18-6, in the first game of the day. The Leopards had beaten the Eagles, 9-7, earlier in the season.
Guarina Garcia led all players with four goals and Stephanie Rosero was right behind with three. Katie Stelnicki and Megan Little added two goals apiece.
La Verne started the game on a 5-0 run as Rosero scored all three of her goals in the opening quarter and never looked back. The Leopards outscored the Eagles in every quarter and closed strong with a 5-1 fourth quarter.
The Leopards had a tougher time against No. 14 Division I UC Santa Barbara in the final game of the tournament and lost, 21-6.
The Gauchos shut out La Verne, 7-0, in the first quarter as the Leopards never found their offensive footing and cruised the rest of the way.
Garcia led the Leopards with three goals, Rosero had two and Stelnicki scored one.
Taylor Shore paced all players with six goals for UC Santa Barbara and Lauren Martin had four.
The Leopards are back in action tomorrow at Las Flores Park against St. Francis (N.Y.) at 11 a.m.
