Women's Water Polo handles Caltech, 17-5

LA VERNE, Calif. — Teresa Zuniga, Victoria Mezack and Emily Randall each registered a hat trick to lead the University of La Verne women's water polo team to a 17-5 win over Caltech on Wednesday at La Verne Aquatics Center.

La Verne improves to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC. Caltech falls to 3-10 and 0-1.

Zuniga and Mezack each had three goals to lead all players. Candice Vorbeck and Catie Tuning scored two apiece.

The Leopards grabbed the game's first six goals to put it away early. Catie Tuning opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the game and Mezack notched her first tally 25 seconds later.Randall put one away and Mezack scored her second a few minutes later and the Leopards grabbed a 4-0 lead not three minutes into the game.

Caltech broke their scoring seal with Sasha Zemsky's marker 25 seconds into the second quarter but La Verne answered with three unanswered goals by Vorbeck, Tuning and Salena Zapata to run away from the Beavers.

Cambria Serrano got the start in the cage for the Leopards and made three saves. Samantha Murrillo took over at the start of the second half and also made three saves.
