Women's Water Polo defeats VMI, 15-8

LA VERNE, Calif. — Cambria Serrano made 12 saves, Stephanie Rosero scored five goals and the University of La Verne women's water polo team beat Virginia Military Institute, 15-8, on Thursday at La Verne Aquatics Center.

La Verne improves to 12-3 overall while VMI falls to 5-7.

The Leopards came roaring out of the gate, scoring the game's first four goals. In the game's first two minutes, Catie Tuning opened the scoring after a nifty entry pass from Rosero, Guarina Garcia converted a 1-on-1 fastbreak opportunity and Rosero put away a penalty shot. Serrano made a couple of highlight saves to help the Leopards to an early advantage.

The Keydets made it interesting in the fourth after outscoring La Verne, 3-2, in the third and taking the first goal of the final frame to get within 11-7. But Rosero scored three goals and Guarina Garcia manhandled her defender--all unanswered--to stake the Leopards out to a 15-7 lead, effectively sealing the game.

Garcia finished with four goals. Tuning and Megan Little each had two.

Rebecca Serrano led VMI with three goals.

La Verne is back in action on Saturday at Cal Lutheran at 11 a.m.
