Women's Water polo tops Toronto 11-5

LA VERNE, Calif. — Stephanie Rosero scored five goals to power the La Verne women's water polo team to a 11-5 victory over the University of Toronto on Tuesday at Las Flores Park. La Verne improves to 1-1 and Toronto falls to 2-1.

Rosero scored the game's opening goal at the 6:11 mark of the first quarter and went on to score three of La Verne's first four goals as the Leopards took a 4-1 lead into the intermission. Meanwhile, La Verne's defense was able to neutralize Toronto's to start the game, shutting out the Varsity Blues in the first quarter and holding them scoreless until 1:34 left in the second quarter.

Megan Little scored the first goal of the second half to make it 5-1 La Verne before Toronto's Emily Kelvin-Davies converted a penalty shot to keep the Varsity Blues within three. But Hayley Cates scored on the next possession for her first La Verne goal and Rosero punched one in just before the buzzer sounded on the third quarter to give the Leopards a 7-2 lead.

Heather Barba stretched La Verne's lead to 8-2 with her first goal of the season but Toronto briefly made it interesting with three unanswered goals in two minutes to make it 8-5 with 3:20 to go. However, the Leopards regrouped and scored the game's last three goals to seal the win. Guarina Garcia started the run with a goal at the 2:57 mark, Rosero added her final tally and Jasmine Bustamante capped off the run.

Anna Miroslavic led Toronto with three goals.

The Leopards are back in action next Tuesday against St. Francis (N.Y.)
