Women's Water Polo falls short at Pomona-Pitzer 5-4

CLAREMONT, Calif. — In a potential preview of the SCIAC championship, Pomona-Pitzer edged the La Verne women's water polo team 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.

The two teams split their season series last year, with Pomona-Pitzer taking the regular season matchup and La Verne claiming a win in the semifinal of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. The Leopards and the Saghens have once again emerged as contenders along with defending champion Whittier, separating themselves from the rest of the pack through four games.

Both teams sit at 3-1 in SCIAC play.

The Leopards opened the scoring with Candice Vorbeck's goal 31 seconds into the game and the teams went goal-for-goal all the way through the third quarter, with Christina Williamson's goal at the 4:39 mark in the third quarter tying the game at 4-4.

But La Verne could not find an answer to that goal and Pomona-Pitzer's Jocelyn Castro scored the game-winner with 6:38 left in the game. The Leopards got one final chance to even the game when they drew an exclusion with 40 seconds remaining but failed to convert.

La Verne drew eight exclusions on the game but capitalized on just one of them, a power play goal by Stephanie Rosero in the second quarter.

Megan Little led the Leoaprds with two goals.

Williamson finished with a game-high three and Castro had two.

The Leopards return to action at home against the Poets on Saturday.
