Leopards close Convergence Tournament

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne women's water polo teams battled in their final two games of the 2018 Convergence Tournament but dropped a pair of close games Saturday afternoon.

Villanova 11, La Verne 9

The Leopards took a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter but the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run in the second period to take lead for good.

Jassmine Kezman had a big game for the Leopards. The freshman finished with a team-high four goals and three steals. 

Emily Mena netted two goals.

Yuri UjifusaJasmine Bustamante, and Victoria Mezack each found the back of the net once. Mezack also dished two assists.

Susana Curiel and Bustamante both added one assist.

Shelby Garcia totaled 12 saves in the cage for La Verne and added two steals. 

Villanova was led by Dominique Clark's five goals.

Sonoma State 9, La Verne 7

The Leopards and Seawolves went into the break with five goals apiece, but Sonoma State outscored La Verne 4-2 in the second half to take the win.

Kezman finished the final game of the Convergence Tournament with another four goals. Defensively she totaled two steals. 

Bustamante scored twice and added two steals. Mezack finished with a pair of assists.

Ashley Bennet added a goal of her own.

Garcia finished the match with 10 saves and steal.

Next Game: The Leopards next play tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. against Saint Francis Brooklyn at Las Flores Park.
