Leopards edged late by Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Jassmine Kezman went on a rampage in the fourth, scoring three times in two minutes to erase a three-goal deficit, pulling the University of La Verne women's water polo team even with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with just under four and a half minutes left to play.

But the Athenas went on a three-goal run of their own in the final 2:19 to pull away from La Verne, beating the Leopards 10-7 Saturday afternoon.

Kezman finished the game with four goals. Emily Mena notched her second hat trick of the season and a steal.

After the Leopards went into halftime with down 5-2, La Verne traded a pair of goals with the Athenas in the third quarter to send them into the final period down 7-4.

La Verne took advantage of CMS exclusions in the fourth quarter. Kezman scored on a power play a minute and a half into the period and converted a penalty shot to get her team within a point of the lead with 5:07 left to play.

Forty seconds later, she tied the game with her fourth goal of the match. But Roxy Kiessling put the Athenas up for good off an assist from Amelia Ayala.

Shelby Garcia finished the game with eight saves. Susana Curiel and Victoria Mezack each added an assist. Mezack finished with one steal.

Season Impact: The Leopards move to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the SCIAC. The Athenas improve 7-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Next Game: La Verne continues SCIAC competition Tuesday, March 13 when they travel to Thousand Oaks to play the Regals at 4 p.m.
