Women's Water Polo drops close game to Chapman

LA VERNE, Calif. — Jassmine Kezman and Jasmine Bustamante each scored three goals and the University of La Verne women's water polo team outscored the Chapman Panthers 4-3 in the second half Saturday afternoon at Las Flores Park.

But the Leopards couldn't overcome a first half deficit, falling 9-7.

Season Impact: The Leopards fall to 7-12 overall and 4-5 in conference play. La Verne currently sits a half game behind Redlands for fourth place in the SCIAC with five games left to play.

Chapman improves to 8-14 overall and 4-5 in the SCIAC.

Jordan Ehara scored for the Leopards with 39 seconds remaining in the opening quarter to keep La Verne within one goal of Chapman heading into the second quarter. 

But the Panthers shut out the Leopards in the second period, going on a 2-0 run to lead 6-3 at the break.

La Verne made a push in the second half with Bustamante scoring all three of her goals in the fourth quarter, but the Leopards couldn't pull even with the SCIAC opponent.

Yuri Ujifusa, Kate Bradley, and Emily Mena all notched an assist.

Shelby Garcia finished with nine goals and two steals.

Next Game: The Leopards next head to Whittier to face the Poets in a 7 p.m. match-up on Wednesday, April 4. La Verne beat Whittier 10-6 in their meeting earlier this season.
