Sato leads Leopards at Pomona-Pitzer Invitational

Senior Shelby Sato led the University of La Verne women's cross country squad with a sixty-ninth place finish at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational Saturday.

The Leopards scored 317 points to take 11th in a field of 12 teams, including multiple NCAA Division I programs. Cal St. San Marcos won the competition only 29 points while Cougars senior Ayded Reyes was first in the 147-runner field with a time of 22 minutes, 5.7 seconds.

Sato covered the 6,000-meter course in 25:16.5 while senior Yanet Urciaga was close behind in 73rd (25:40.8). A trio of freshman rounded out the top five. Jacquie Scherrer was 81st (26:04.7), Andrea Valdez was 97th (26:49.3), and Kamalei Lee was 120th (27:55.5). Meanwhile, freshman Summer O'Brien was 141st (31:07.9) and senior Cindy Lai was 142nd (31:23.9).

The Leopards were without top runner junior Andrea Ramirez as well as junior Sam Reed due to injuries. 

The Leopards will be off next weekend before a return to action at the SCIAC Multi-Dual on Oct. 18. The women's race is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at La Mirada Park in La Mirada, Calif.
