Leopard cross country squads compete at league dual meet

LA MIRADA- The University of La Verne women's cross country squad got its first taste of SCIAC action at the conference multi-dual meet Friday evening.

The Leopards dealt with setbacks to several top runners and compiled a 0-8 record.

Sophomore Yanet Urciaga was the first Leo across the line, covering the 6,000-meter course in 25 minutes, 11.57 seconds to take 56th overall in the 112-runner field. Junior Andrea Ramirez was second for the Leos in 61st place (25:35.31). Freshman Andrea Valdez was 64th (25:46.63), while freshman Jacquie Scherrer and sophomore Shelby Sato were 77th (26:32.93) and 78th (27:36.84) respectively. Freshman Summer O'Brien took 105th (30:22.02) and sophomore Sam Reed was 112th (32:07.39) to round out the varsity squad. 

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps recorded an 8-0 record while Cal Lutheran senior Melissa Skiba won the individual title in a time of 21:35.32. 

The Leos will return to action Nov. 2 for the SCIAC championships meet at Prado Park in Chino, Calif. Race time is 9 a.m.
