Women's Cross Country opens season in Claremont

CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne women's cross country opened the 2018 season with a tri-meet against Pomona-Pitzer and Occidental College.

Top returner Melissa Cerrillos led the Leopards with a time of 15:20, placing fifth overall. Close behind was senior Rachael Dela Cruz, crossing the finish line in eighth place with a time of 15:31.

From the Coach: "The women's team showed a lot of potential today. Our one and two runners, Melissa and Rachael, were impressive up front and the supporting cast did a great job closing out the team scoring. We aren't at full strength yet so I'm looking forward to seeing what our team can do when they all line up together."

Sophomore Michelle Suarez finished third for La Verne, clocking in at 16:25. Sophomores Yasmin Lopez and Ashley Garnica finished one second apart from each other with Lopez ending at 17:14 and Garnica at 17:15.

Next Race: The Leopards compete next at the Biola Invitational at 8 a.m. next Saturday, September 8. The race will be held at Ted Craig Regional Park in Fullerton.
