CMS Softball Moves to 4-0 in SCIAC with 5-4 Win over La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Madison Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with two RBI, including the game-winning squeeze bunt in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team took a 5-4 win over La Verne on Thursday in the completion of a game which was suspended by lightning on March 24.

With the win, CMS moves to 13-6 overall and moves to 4-0 in the SCIAC, including a three-game sweep of La Verne, which included an 11-3 win on March 22, and a 4-3, 10-inning win on March 24. The second game of the March 24 was suspended in the bottom of the first with the score 0-0, and the two teams resumed play with two outs and nobody on.

The Athenas scored a run when the game resumed, as Rachel Sapirstein drew a walk and scored on an RBI double from Gonzalez to deep center field. After La Verne tied it in the second, CMS had a three-run third inning, with RBI singles from Jacqueline Solomon and Destiny Garcia to move ahead 4-1.

La Verne pulled even in the sixth and threatened for more, as the bases were loaded with one out after an RBI single from Ashley Rodriguez. Jade Johnson got the final two outs on a grounder to shortstop, as Solomon came home for the force, and a fly ball to Giselle Lai in center field.

Lai drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth to start the winning rally, and Sapirstein singled on a sharp one-hopper to shortstop that got through to shallow left. Lai went to third on the play, and Gonzalez then picked up her second RBI of the day with a perfect squeeze bunt in front of home plate, bringing home the winning run (with one RBI coming on a ball that traveled about 220 feet and the second going about two feet). Johnson retired the side in order in the seventh  on two pop-ups and a grounder to first to get the win in relief.

Sapirstein was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Athenas, while Kaili Aqui and Sarah Loper were each 2-for-4. Johnson improved to 4-1 on the season, throwing 1.2 innings and allowing no runs on one hit.

CMS will be back in action for a three-game series with Cal Lutheran, including a single game at Cal Lutheran on Friday and a doubleheader at Athena Field on Saturday at 12 noon.
