Game Preview

Story by Sebastián Abdón Ibarra, Sports Information Student Assistant

The University of La Verne football team faces a tough test this week in the form of the University of Redlands Bulldogs. Redlands boasts an impressive win on their resume over a tough Claremont-Mudd-Scripps team last week.

Coming off of his best game as a Leo in which he threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns, quarterback Tyrone Williams Jr. could be the key to an upset on Saturday afternoon if he is able to elevate his game further. Nathaniel Sagastume has emerged as one of Williams’ go-to targets this season, last week against Cal Lutheran Sagastume racked up 123 yards receiving. The senior from Garden Grove is the leading receiver in SCIAC with 404 yards. The trio of Williams, Sagastume, and Spencer Pool have combined to give La Verne the best passing attack in the SCIAC, averaging over 300 yards of passing per game. With Redlands having one of the better rush defenses in SCIAC a good performance from Williams and company will be key.

The strength of the Bulldogs is their running game as it ranks first in SCIAC with 732 total yards on the ground for an average of 183 yards per game. CMS has rushed for 817 yards but has played one more game. Not only does Redlands pound the rock, they are extremely efficient as they also are tied for the best yards per carry average in SCIAC with 5.2. The Bulldogs also possess the third leading rusher in SCAIC in the form of Kai Thompson. In four games, Thompson ranks in the top five in yards, yards per game, yards per carry, and touchdowns.

The Bulldogs have struggled with turnovers in the passing game, totaling four interceptions to just six touchdowns. Redlands does not have a single receiver in the top 10 in receiving. Look for the Leos to stack the box and force quarterback Nathan Martinez to throw the ball. While La Verne’s pass defense ranks fifth in SCIAC, they only allow 216.3 yards per game and are tied for second in the conference with five interceptions.

Welcome to the University of La Verne and enjoy the game!
