THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran softball won its second straight series and swept La Verne on Saturday afternoon. The Regals took the first game of the doubleheader, 4-2, and the second game, 8-3.

The Leopards were in the hunt for one of the final spots for the SCIAC Tournament. The Regals were on a mission and denied the Leopards that opportunity. Cal Lutheran improved to 11-20 overall and 4-14 in SCIAC. The Regals have won four of their last six games.

Game One
Brooke DeSmet got the start and went the distance. In her 7.0 innings, she allowed just six hits and two earned runs. Her lone strikeout was a backwards K as she got the Leopards' batter looking. After giving up a run in each of the first two innings, she went to work and shut down the Leopards the rest of the way. La Verne left three runners on base in the third and two in the fourth as DeSmet got out of multiple jams.

La Verne scored first and went up 2-0 after two innings. The Regals fired back in the bottom of the third. The Regals recorded three doubles in the inning with the first one coming from Makayla Lopez. With two out, Olivia Vargas got the Regals on the board with her double. Ariana Mendoza made it back-to-back doubles and the score was tied. The Regals added one more run in the inning as Emily Blank put the ball in play and an error allowed Mendoza to score.

The game continued to move quickly as the Regals added a run in the fifth. With runner on first and second, a sacrifice bunt from Blank moved them over. DeSmet came to bat and helped herself out as a ground ball out let Vargas score. The Regals cruised the rest of the way and tied the series at one game apiece.

Game Two
Casey Edwards was in the circle and pitched a complete game. She went 7.0 innings with seven hits and three earned runs. She struck out two and picked up her fifth win of the season.

The Regals carried their momentum over to game two. They scored one run in the first, three in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth. Edwards and Vargas had 2 RBI and Mendoza, Lopez had one each.

The Leopard finally broke through in the top of the fifth and got two ruins back. The Regals responded with one run in the bottom of the inning. Edwards added another RBI, bringing in Vargas. La Verne scored one run in the seventh, but Edwards proceeded to shut the door and ended the game with a strikeout. The Regals took the series in exciting fashion.

The Regals have one more series this season. It starts on Friday at Whittier. First pitch is set for 3 pm.
