Hannah Jerrier posts fifth straight double double in loss to La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team suffered their first loss within Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Saturday afternoon falling 62-53 to the University of La Verne.

Redlands has now dropped two in a row, moving to 7-4, 2-1 SCIAC, while La Verne improves to 11-1, 4-0 SCIAC.  The last time the Bulldogs lost to the Leopards was back on December 1, 2018 (72-63).  Since 2014-15 Redlands has posted a 13-2 record against ULV.

Hannah Jerrier (Canton, MA) led the offense for the Maroon and Grey posting her fifth straight double double and her seventh on the season.  She went 14 points and 14 rebounds along with two assists, four steals and three blocks.  Alyssa Downs (South San Francisco, CA) was the only other Bulldog to reach double figures posting 11 points, with nine coming from behind the arc.

La Verne jumped out in front quickly in the first quarter shooting 45.5% from the field as Chiara Brown provided a 12-point performance giving ULV a 20-13 lead.  Both teams stayed in single digits in the second quarter as Redlands held a slight 9-8 edge pulling within six at the break.

Out of the half Redlands found the spark they needed pouring in 17 points as Colbi Zorich (Kenmore, WA) and Chyanne Pagkalinawan (Valencia, CA) combined for 12 points and five rebounds.  Zorich and Downs went back to back to start the quarter making it a two point game (28-26) and a minute later Pagkalinawan would add a triple followed by a Jerrier jumper that pulled Redlands within one (32-31).  Six in a row by ULV pushed the margin back to eight and despite a 6-2 run to close out the final 2:21 the Maroon and Grey still found themselves trailing, this time by four (43-29).

Six straight to start the fourth by ULV pushed the margin to double digits for the first time (49-39).  Jerrier ended the run with a jumper at the 6:32 mark and that then led to an Aliyah Anderson (Oceanside, CA) layin, which moved the score to 49-43.  A minute later the Leos strung together five in a row to again make it a ten-point game with 3:43 left and that proved enough despite UR adding ten of the next eleven points thanks to a pair of triples from Downs and another two buckets from Jerrier.  Following this surge Redlands make it a two point game 55-53 with 1:05 left, but seven free-throws by ULV down the stretch would secure the win.

The Bulldogs only shot 32.3% from the field and 23.5% from deep.  They did do well at the free-throw line shooting 81.8%, despite going to the line only 11 times.  Inside UR was outrebounded 49-41, turned the ball over 19 times, added 18 points in the paint and received 12 bench points.

Redlands remains in conference play and again on the road next Wednesday, January 4 when they travel to take on Caltech beginning at 7:00pm.
