Football Preview: University of Redlands vs. University of La Verne

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands football team heads into week 8 coming off a 38-28 road loss at Chapman University. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 1-5 overall and 1-1 SCIAC. The Bulldogs, who sit in third place, host the University of La Verne (1-5, 1-2 SCIAC), who sit tied for sixth-place within the conference standings, on Saturday, October 22 at 7:05 p.m. inside Ted Runner Stadium.

Week 7 Results

Redlands

The Bulldogs trailed 10-0 after one quarter at Chapman before scoring 14 unanswered points through the mid-way point of the second quarter to take a 14-10 lead. The Panthers were able to take a lead into half after a touchdown with 28 seconds left.

The Bulldogs allowed the first two touchdowns of the second half and trailed by 17 with 4:32 left in the third quarter. Myles Herrera (Yucaipa, CA) kept the Bulldogs alive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Graig Padgett (Steilacoom, WA) with 33 seconds remaining in the third. Unfortunately, the Panthers answered with a 75-yard touchdown pass at the 21 second mark as the lead returned to 17.

Scott Tinsley (Capitola, CA) continued his great season with a 75-yard pick-six in the middle of the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs fell on the road.

Tinsley's pick was his second of the season and his eighth in 16 games as a Bulldog. He also now has two pick-sixes in that stretch.

The Bulldogs allowed 64 percent on third down (9-of-14), 540 yards allowed with an average yards per play of 8.2. The Panthers threw for 405 yards and only punted twice. The Bulldogs defense did have two interceptions.

Redlands offense had 330 total yards with 206 yards rushing, running for 6.1 yards per carry.  They had 15 first downs but allowed 25 for the Panthers.

After running for a career-high 143 yards at Cal Lutheran, Andrew Kellstrom (San Bernardino, CA) posted 147 yards on only 16 carries, averaging 9.2 yards per carry. Evan Aguon (San Diego, CA) led the way in the air with seven of the team's 11 receptions for 81 of the 124 receiving yards, and one of the two touchdowns.

Dawson Brokman (Martinez, CA) tied for a game-high with seven total tackles, Tinsley added six tackles to his pick and a 0.5 tackle for loss (TFL).

La Verne

The Leopards are coming off a 43-20 win at home against Whittier. La Verne is now 1-5 overall after their first win of the season. They led 23-0 and avoided a comeback attempt by the Poets after they scored 14-straight points to make it a 10-point lead, 30-20, with 8:07 left in the game.

Quarterback Miguel Aguero Jr. went 15-23 for 182 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Abel Cueva ran the ball 12 times for 70 yards. DJ Williams and Isaiah Harris had 12 and 10 total tackles, respectively. Mark Martinez had 1.5 TFLs.

As a team the Leopards gained 20 first downs, went 6-for-12 on third down, had 337 yards of total offense, and forced three Poet turnovers, one fumble and two interceptions.

Series History

The Bulldogs defeated the Leopards 51-7 on the road last season, and are currently riding a five-game winning streak against La Verne. Their last loss come at home in 2015 when they lost a shootout 49-42.
