LA VERNE, CA — Rebecca Horn got the Leopards off to a hot start and the University of La Verne women's basketball team rolled on their way to an 86-69 win over Yellowstone Christian Saturday afternoon.
Horn went off in the first quarter, knocking down four three-pointers to help the Leopards take a 29-15 lead after the opening 10 minutes. The Butte College transfer finished with 26 points, three rebounds, and went 3-3 from the line.
The Leopards continued to roll in the second quarter, opening the frame with a 15-6 run highlighted by another three from Horn. La Verne outscored the Centurions 22-11 in the second quarter to take a 51-26 lead at the break.
The Centurions attempted to mount a comeback midway through the third quarter, going on an 11-0 run to cut La Verne's lead to 66-41 with under two minutes left in the period. Yellowstone continued to battle in the fourth quarter, shortening the deficit to 17 points after Hanna Hayes sunk a three-pointer with 3:50 left in the game. Hayes led the Centurions with a game-high 31 points.
Jasmine Xiong dished out a team-high five assists, scored six points and grabbed one rebound. Madison Hotchkiss finished with six points, two rebounds, and two assists. Charnpreet Takher grabbed seven boards and scored five points. Rachel Gafford totaled four rebounds, three assists, and four points.
The Leopards showcased their depth with 15 different players scoring in the win. Fifty-seven of La Verne's points came from the bench.
La Verne earns its first win of the season and improves to 1-1 overall.
