LOS ANGELES — No. 23 La Verne tennis team swept Occidental, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at Scholl Canyon Golf and Tennis Club.
La Verne improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC play. Oxy falls to 0-1 and 0-1.
After cruising to a 3-0 sweep in doubles, Janae Chinn extended the lead with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Lauren Hutkins at No. 3 singles and Areli Martinez clinched it for the Leopards with another 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over Lucy Malloch.
Bridget Etchegaray then beat Leilani Bonis-Erickson, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 and Madison Madewell dispatched Andrea Clawson, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5.
La Verne kept it rolling with Shenelle Trujillo debating Nicole Castro, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 and Savanah Goode completed the clean sweep with at 7-6(9), 6-0, win over Samantha Farrell at No. 2.
The Leopards cruised in doubles portion of the match as well. The No. 1 duo of Etchegaray and Goode and the No. 2 team of Chinn and Trujillo each claimed an 8-3 win at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles, respectively. Savannah Fisher and Madewell then gave the Leopards a 3-0 lead with an 8-4 win over Isabella Korfman and Clawson at No. 3.
The Leopards embark on a two-match road trip to Texas next weekend. La Verne faces East Texas Baptist on Saturday, Feb. 13 and takes on Texas Lutheran on Sunday, Feb. 14.
